Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.

CRHS & NCHS Class of 2023 were collectively awarded over $3.3 million in merit, athletic, academic, and senatorial scholarships combined. A large portion of that amount is generously provided through scholarships from organizations in Caroline County and on the Eastern Shore. Prior to graduation, each high school welcomed scholarship providers and recipients, along with families and staff, to awards ceremonies. “We are rich in community love and support, especially when it comes to our students,” Superintendent Derek Simmons said at the event. “The tireless and often year-round work of foundations, organizations, and clubs results in the financial support to advance students’ opportunities beyond their graduation ceremony. We are grateful beyond words for their generosity.” Read more: tinyurl.com/2r9tp3jk
