Dear LMS Families:
I wanted to make you aware of recent social media posts containing threats of potential gun violence in schools. The post includes an image with words, and has been circulating on social media. While there are variations of the image, the majority of them are the same. This image originated out of state and has been used in threats to specific schools all over the country. However, it is now in our community, and being circulated and used to accuse one LMS student as the person intending potential gun violence towards others.
Every single time this threat has come to our attention from any source, LMS and CCPS work with law enforcement partners and the Maryland Center for School Safety to thoroughly investigate every detail, including the original source of the threat. Each time, this threat has been determined a non-credible threat, and the LMS student named has been thoroughly investigated and found to be falsely accused.
For the purpose of reassuring our students, staff, and families, police presence has been increased at LMS this week. I am asking families to please talk with your children about the damage done when images and rumors are spread through social media and texts. Please stress the importance of distinguishing between spreading a rumor and making a report to a trusted adult. Assure them that the adults in their school and district take all of this seriously, and spend considerable time and resources to ensure their safety and security.
Lastly, please know that in addition to being a proud principal, I am also an LMS parent with more children in other CCPS schools. LMS staff, district staff, and local law enforcement officials are also CCPS parents. Nothing is more important to us than the work we do to keep all students safe.
Please reach out if you have any questions.
Jeannine Necessary, Principal
