Teachers Amy Sundt and Sarah Waters were recognized at the January Board of Education meeting for earning National Board Certification (NBC).
NBC is a professional certification that is designed to develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers and generate ongoing improvement in schools nationwide. To earn an NBC, eligible candidates must demonstrate advanced knowledge, skills, and practice in their individual certificate area. To maintain certification, periodic demonstration of knowledge and skills is required.
Amy Sundt is a Reading Intervention teacher at Denton Elementary School, where she began her teaching career in 1999.
Sarah Waters teaches 4th grade English Language Arts at Greensboro Elementary School. She began her teaching career 2011, and joined CCPS in 2014 as a Math intervention teacher.
Both Ms. Sundt and Ms. Waters achieved their NBC in the certification area Literacy: Reading-Language Arts Early and Middle Childhood. They now join the ranks of CCPS teachers who earned an NBC in previous years and have maintained their certification: Jessica Andres, teacher at GES; Jeannine Necessary, principal at LMS; Mirta Valdes-Bradner, teacher at NCHS; Kevin Webster, teacher at NCHS; and Robert Willougby, Supervisor of Human Resources.
Dr. Simmons expressed his appreciation to Ms. Waters who was in attendance at the meeting, and thanked both teachers for taking the necessary steps to earn the NBC. “There is a tremendous amount of work involved,” he stated, “and a lot of reflective practice on you as an individual.” He added that they were the first CCPS teachers to move through the process since NBC became a component of Maryland’s Blueprint for the Future, and that it would benefit their students tremendously.
