The Lockerman Middle School Chorus and North Caroline High School Rhythm of the Ridge joined forces for an evening celebration in honor of Black History Month. The combined chorus opened the evening with Lift Every Voice and Sing, a beloved poem and song penned by Harlem Renaissance writer James Weldon Johnson and set to music by his brother, J. Rosamond Johnson.
The program included a recognition of a variety of community leaders who have each had a profound impact in Caroline County. Many of them were leaders in education in the past or currently.
Honorees were Brent Beck, Bishop Dane Coleman, Jason & Tierra Edwards, Nicole Fisher, Dr. Yolanda Holloway, Tyvon Horsey, Arthur Jackson, James Jackson, Stefanie Johnson, Jonathan Tilghman, Talisha Tilghman, Terae Warner, Savannah Winston, Doncella Wilson, Verson Wilson and Trevor Nichols. Each individual was introduced by a student, and a slideshow detailed their accomplishments.
In addition to the student singers, an Alumni & Friends Community Gospel Choir also performed two selections. Choir members were Talisha Tilghman, Nicole Fisher, Anita Barrett, Kathy Holland, Wanda Molock, Faith Burton, Tee Watson, Derek Simmons, Brittney Holland, Jackie Stull, Chelsey Bledsoe, Ambia Mason, Courtney Handte, Randall Butler, and Michele Wayman.
NCHS Principal Matt Spiker paid tribute to the late Mary Fisher, a beloved educator in Caroline, and guest speaker Dale Brown provided remarks on the topic of leadership.
The event was coordinated by NCHS teacher Randall Butler, and LMS teacher Leroy Potter provided leadership on the piano.
