At the January Board of Education meeting, the Board considered a revision to the Student Dress Code policy. The Board initially requested a review and possible revision due to the age of the policy as well as recent community input.

Director of Student Services Kirk Howie explained that by definition, Board policy should be broad and general, with specifics covered in the accompanying regulation that enforces the policy. Revisions to this policy will adhere to that principle.

Mr. Howie reviewed the timeline and process for the revision:

Spring 2024: Community member input via board meeting public comment

Summer 2024: Made updates to the policy and conducted an initial survey of schools and administration; reviewed with administrators and supervisors; and reviewed other dress codes in Maryland

Fall 2024: Reviewed draft with committee, student board representatives, the Citizens Advisory Committee and the School System Improvement Council

Early 2025: Board review, initial and follow up feedback; finalization of regulations

Through March 3: Public comment via email

March 4: Presented to the Board for second reading and potential enactment or further revision.

The public is invited to share feedback with the Board by emailing comments to pio@ccpsstaff.org.  Comments will be accepted until noon on March 3, 2025.

Dress Code Policy III.31.34 with Revisions

Board Meeting Dress Code Presentation

According to Board policy, new and revised policies are reviewed by the Board at least two meetings prior to their adoption. Revised policies may be adopted after review at one meeting. The exception is a new policy that is required by the Maryland State Department of Education, which may be adopted with one reading by the Board.
