Caroline County Public Schools has been advised that work on River Road in Denton will continue through October 1, resulting in road closures and rerouting of school traffic.

Closures:

  • River Road will be closed between Rt. 404 and Central Avenue until October 1.

  • Holly Road will be closed between Central Avenue and Rt. 404 from 2:40 until 3:15pm to manage traffic during dismissal time.

Vehicles driving to or from North Caroline High School (NCHS) in the morning will use Central Avenue to access the parking lots and drop off loop in front of the school on River Road. Buses will be using Holsinger Road to access the bus parking lot on River Road. This arrangement is an effort to prevent cars from either detaining or being detained by buses in the morning. (Map 1 below.)

Vehicles leaving NCHS in the afternoon will use Central Avenue to Ridgely Road (Rt. 480) from 2:40pm until 3:15pm in order to access the traffic light crossover on Rt. 404. CCPS buses will also use this route during anticipated heavy travel days. (Map 2 below.)

(Labor Day weekend traffic days: Thursday, Aug. 29; Friday, Aug. 30; Tuesday, Sept. 3)

NCHS, LMS and RES families may expect afternoon bus delays during the heavy traffic days, and should ensure their contact information is up-to-date in PowerSchool.

Please note:

  • The Caroline County Sheriff’s Office and Caroline County Public Works are coordinating their staffing and equipment needs to manage the closure effectively.

  • Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is reviewing traffic light timings at Rt. 480 (Ridgely Road) and Rt. 404 to help ease congestion and have staff onsite during the initial days of school.

  • Safety Measures: Caroline County Sheriff's Office, State Highway Administration, and Department of Public Works will be at the following intersections daily when school lets out.

    • Central and Holly

    • Holsinger and Central

    • 480 and Central

    • Holly and Holsinger

We appreciate the assistance, collaboration and communication from our partners, the Caroline County Commissioners, Sheriff’s Office and Public Works, and MDOT as this important project moves forward. CCPS staff, students and families will be updated as needed through CCPS communication channels.
