At the June meeting, the Caroline County Board of Education recognized the Girls on the Run Program and the Boys Running Club, both from Greensboro Elementary School (GES). Both groups were joined by Principal Mary Jo Kerr, Assistant Principal Briana Walker, and club coaches Becky Willoughby, Tracey Walton and Angela Webster.
Girls on the Run Program
GES Principal Mary Jo Kerr shared that the members of the Girls on the Run Program trained for 10 weeks to prepare for a 5k race at Sailwinds Park in Cambridge. The event included other Girls on the Run programs on the Eastern Shore. Despite race day being extremely windy and rainy, everyone participated, with Piper Holt taking first place overall.
Girls on the Run is a program that inspires girls to recognize their inner strength, increase their level of physical activity, and stand up for themselves and others.
Members are: Mckenzie Allen, Kenji Navarro Bautista, Katie Bennett, Laura Bennett, Amelia Bryson, Kara Calahan, Emerson Durham, Kista Gribble, Piper Holt, Shayla Klages, Khloe Riley, Shaylee Ringgold, Sophia Ritter, Kaydence Roden, Alice Swann, Kelsey Samuel, Alyssa Swain, Tatiana Soriano-Vasquez, Emma Totaro, Aubrey Vanskiver, Mckinley Walls, and Holly Weedman.
Boys Running Club
Merrill Morgan 5K Memorial Run organizers Elizabeth Pinkett, Carol Seward and Stacy Seward attended the board meeting. Ms. Pinkett provided information about the event which was created to honor CRHS counselor and long-time basketball coach Merrill Morgan. Mr. Morgan passed away after a 19 year battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Ms. Pinkett shared the this was the second year for the 5K run, and GES Boys Running Club was the first group to sign up for the event.
The boys trained for eight weeks in order to participate in the run, and every student finished in under 45 minutes. Silas Jones placed 3rd in the overall race and 1st in the boys’ age group. Also in that age group, Grayson Hackett took 2nd place and Connor Reed earned 3rd place.
Ms. Pinkett reported that as a result of the participation, they were able to donate over $4200 to Rock Steady Boxing, a group for Parkinson’s patients in Easton. At the request of the Morgan family, they also donated over $3500 to the Michael J. Fox Foundation
