Lockerman students Ariana Alvarez and Lucy Howard were recognized at the June board of education meeting for earning first place in the Group Exhibit Category at Maryland History Day competition. In addition, their teacher Linda Echternach was recognized for being named Maryland State History Day Teacher of the Year.
This year's History Day theme was Turning Points in History. The students’ project was entitled ‘Freedom, Fashion and Feminism ... How the Bicycle Fueled the Women's Rights Movement’. Their display including photographs, quotes, and student composed words to prove and support their thesis and complete their project.
Their first competition was for the region, where they won first place in the Group Exhibit category. This qualified them to compete in the state competition where they also earned first place in the category. Their next competition is at National History Day at University of Maryland College Park June 9-13 with students from all over the United States. It was noted at the meeting that this is the first time Caroline students have qualified to compete at the national level for History Day.
Ms. Echternach’s award for Maryland History Day Teacher of the Year marks the first time a Caroline County teacher has been earned this honor. At the board meeting, Dr. Simmons noted that he and Ms. Echternach started participation in the History Day competition in Caroline ten years ago, and he was thrilled to see her bring it to this level of achievement. He praised the girls for working on such an intriguing topic, and looked forward to seeing the project.
