Academy of Health Professions

This is a program of study designed for juniors and seniors who are interested in hands-on professions in the healthcare industry. During the first semester students learn basic human anatomy, current health issues, and  entry-level skills to provide care to patients. During the second semester students learn advanced skills for patient care and investigate disease processes with a concentration on the care of a geriatric patient. During clinical rotations the students will have the opportunity to participate in care of patients in a variety of community based-health facilities.

Upon successful completion of the program the student will be a Certified Nursing Assistant and will be eligible to take the NNAAP exam for Geriatric Nursing Assistant.

CAREER EXPLORATION

Health Professions are good careers for individuals who care about people and want to help others. It’s important to be a good listener with good communication skills. It is very important to work well with others and have good attention to detail. Your job may involve lifting/moving patients, so being physically fit can be important. Depending on your specialization, you may work in high-stress, emergency situations. Your work schedule may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Careers in the field include:

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

  • Registered Nurse (RN)

  • Nurse Practitioner (NP)

  • ER Nurse

  • Travel Nurse

  • Psychiatric Nurse

  • Nursing in any other medical specialty

  • Midwife

  • Dental Hygienist
